Our Story

The Commercial Workers Union of Zimbabwe (CWUZ) has a proud and enduring history that dates back to 1960. Originally founded as the Southern Rhodesia and Allied Workers Union (S.R.C.W.A.U), the union was established to represent the interests of workers during a time of significant political and social transformation in the region.

Founding Leadership (1960):

  • President: Zebediah Mapfumo
  • General Secretary: Edward Watungwa

1964 Congress Leadership:
As the union expanded, new leadership was elected at the 1964 congress:

  • President: Tennyson Magura
  • General Secretary: Phibeon Bangajena

Formation of a Splinter Union (Circa 1970):
Around 1970, internal disagreements led to a split, resulting in the formation of a separate Commercial Workers Union, originating from the Southern Rhodesia Commercial and Allied Workers Union (S.R.C.A.W.U.).

Merger and the Birth of CWUZ (1980):
In 1980, a historic milestone was reached when the two unions merged to form the Commercial Workers Union of Zimbabwe (CWUZ). This year also marked Zimbabwe’s independence from colonial rule, and the country was officially renamed. Post-merger, Alfred Makwarimba was appointed General Secretary, with Mr. Jehurani serving as President.

Leadership Reorganization (1986):
In 1986, to address administrative challenges, CWUZ held a special congress that elected new leadership committed to restoring stability and strengthening the union:

  • President: Daniel Jambwa
  • General Secretary: Shangwa Chifamba

Today, CWUZ continues to stand as a vital representative body for workers across Zimbabwe, advocating for their rights, promoting unity, and fostering fair labor practices.
